Microsoft seems to be giving it out almost free. My school was lending out copies so I just used that.

1. Files, don’t want to lose files

If you have windows vista you won’t lose a thing. If you have XP and below it will simply save everything in a folder called Old Files or something like that.

2. Installed programs, don’t want to lose not one program. I know most work, but I know there will be that one I love that’ll seep through the cracks

I’m not 100% sure on compatibility but things have been going great for me so far. I was expecting some serious problems from not only going Xp to windows 7 but doing so with the 64bit version.
