    Lucky 7 Upgrade?

    Dre

    By Dre | November 12, 2009

Update: Speedy color version cause I’m sleepy. If you don’t recognize these characters, they are the os-tan windows Xp in the back and windows 7 in the front. Here is a link to the black and white version from before.

So we’ve all heard of the new Windows 7 and how it is the update Microsoft lovers and general Windows users (Xp people) have been waiting for. I had ZERO intentions of upgrading ANY time soon until my brother came over a few days ago and started telling me some facts about his upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. He mentioned how some of the features help categorize and organize files better. He also mentioned that Windows 7 is a much more stable version of similar to Windows Vista.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Microsoft said all this shit before. Big deal.

But then he brought to my attention that he used a 64 bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate and said he can see the difference in speed. At the time I wasn’t too familiar with the difference in a 32 bit and 64 bit system; so I googled that shit like curious george. It seems the difference between a 32 bit system and a 64 bit is the number crunching speed. A 64 bits calculates double the speed of a 32 bit system.

    But that’s not all.

The limit of RAM a 32 bit system uses maxes out at roughly 3.25 Gb. That means even if you buy a nice cheap set of 4 sticks of RAM to get that bit more speed out of your system, you will only see 3.25 being used. On the other hand a 64 bit system, such with Windows 7, has a max RAM usage of 192 Gb. I shit you not, if you can SOMEHOW get 192 Gb of RAM on you’re system, Windows 7 will read, register, and use it.(of course taking into accounts the rest of the hardware installed)

I was speechless to find this information out. I mean, all these years of using Windows and I find this shit out NOW?!?!?! In no fucking time at all, I formatted my second internal hard drive, borrowed a copy of Windows 7 from my school, and installed it.

In truth, I wasn’t expecting much. I was just happy I could use all 4 of my gigs of RAM now, but boy was I in for a surprise. I logged in to Windows 7 for the first time and started to install the basics. First came the drivers so my tablet, printer and etc. could be used. Then I begin to install Firefox and move a lot of my files from my old C drive to my new. Slowly, I begin to notice something. It was moving fast, and I mean REALLY fucking fast. There was NO lag when opening and closing files, folders, programs, NONE WHAT SO EVER. Even when I got the occasional error due to driver compatibility issues, when I wanted that fucker closed, it did it, right then and there!!

“Awesome!” I was thinking to myself. “I wonder what else it can do?” So I decided to plug in my HD Cam. I had recorded a few videos in 1080p a while back and they couldn’t play properly on my old Xp system.(the sound would get choppy 5 seconds through) I whipped them out and pressed play with Zoom Player. Same shit happened………Oh well…… But then, for some reason, I decided to open it in the new windows media player. To my complete pleasant surprise, it played perfectly! Ho-oly Shit!

After further testing and comparing I couldn’t come up with any other conclusion than my computer was faster. MUCH faster! And I’m so fucking happy. And to think, I never would have upgraded if my brother would’ve informed me about the benefits.

If you’re interested, my system spec’s are as followed:

    Windows 7 64-Bit Ultimate
    Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 @ 2.40GHz
    RAM 4 Gb
    Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS
    250 Gb Hard Drive

I will be upgrading my pc completely in the coming months to take full advantage of what a 64bit system can offer.(either that or going to japan, well, that’s a different story)
    (24Gb RAM FTW!!!!!)

Well, I remember when vista came out, I didn’t really feel any happiness or any emotions in general. I really didn’t for XP either, but you gotta admit, XP is oodles more stable than vista’s crap. In fact, I have similar specs:

      HP HDX16T

      CPU T9600 – 2.8ghz
      RAM – 4 Gigs
      Nvidia 9600gtm
      1366*768 resolution
      blu-ray

But I would upgrade, but I’m scared about a couple things:

Oh, most important reason, I don’t want to pay @ ALL. Especially for windows 7 ultimate, i have vista ultimate
      1. Files, don’t want to lose files
      2. Installed programs, don’t want to lose not one program. I know most work, but I know there will be that one I love that’ll seep through the cracks
      3. Configurations, there are SOOO many custom things I did for vista & I’m sure I’ll have to for 7.

Oh, most important reason, I don’t want to pay @ ALL. Especially for windows 7 ultimate, i have vista ultimate

Microsoft seems to be giving it out almost free. My school was lending out copies so I just used that.

      1. Files, don’t want to lose files

If you have windows vista you won’t lose a thing. If you have XP and below it will simply save everything in a folder called Old Files or something like that.

      2. Installed programs, don’t want to lose not one program. I know most work, but I know there will be that one I love that’ll seep through the cracks

I’m not 100% sure on compatibility but things have been going great for me so far. I was expecting some serious problems from not only going Xp to windows 7 but doing so with the 64bit version. So far I haven’t ran into anything that has bothered me. To my knowledge, drivers are the main thing that can’t be properly carried over and have to be redone between windows versions.

      3. Configurations, there are SOOO many custom things I did for vista & I’m sure I’ll have to for 7.

Probable, I truly can’t say for certain since I went from Xp to 7.

      Is that a laptop?
