Dude, get a life…

“Get a life”, we’ve all heard it before. Whither it’s said online or in real life. It’s easy to use, it’s easy to understand. It gets the point across, it puts you in command. In simple terms, it shows the victim that your life, regardless of the lack of poof, is better than whatever they are obsessed over. This phrase is the holy grail of belittlement…………when it goes unquestioned.
The truth is, this phrase is extremely vague. When broken down properly, one can see that it is in fact nothing more than a huge contradiction and shouldn’t be said if not at all. Let’s begin!
Now, here is the scenario, a guy is chatting to his friend over a cell phone while enjoying his favorite online game. The conversations are pretty dry but they love to keep in touch from time to time. The friend asks what he usually does in his free time nowadays. He replies, “I play online games.” The friend, who was quite surprised to here this, gives a quick pause and exclaims, “Dude, get a life…”. The guy kinda laughs off the statement and proceeds to make an excuse to end the conversation. Once he hangs up, he sign off the game and lingers with a bit of guilt, considering his friend having a point.
When most of us think about “getting a life” in this scenario, we think of going outside maybe to a park or a movie, getting a girlfriend or boyfriend, or maybe getting a job.(or a second job just to stay busy) These things are the common activities shared by most of us and there for must be what “getting a life” truly means right? I mean, these are the things that could make anyone as happy as possible correct?
Well, that can’t quite be true, because if they were the peak of anyone’s happiness, then we wouldn’t even have a need for the phrase “Get a life”. Everyone would be doing these activities of joy. This would cause us to believe that perhaps the online gaming in this scenario is what makes the guy truly happy. And if he is truly happy, then one is correct to believe that he indeed does have a life. Would it be right to direct this guy to do these activities share by the common person if it doesn’t make him truly happy? It may entertain him, for a bit, but eventually he will grow to dislike it. He will feel his life is miserable but believe since this is what everyone else does then it must be what having a life is all about.
We can also look at it this way. Everyone technically has a life, whither its playing games all day, shopping for clothing with every pay check, or being the leader of a soap opera fanclub. They are all gaining some type of knowledge about this mysterious world we all inhabit. In order to not have a life, one would essentially have to be dead, or the un-living. From this deduction, we can only conclude that the phrase “get a life” can only appy to….
zombies.
Zombies do not have lives. They can not learn nor can they evolve. Their soul purpose is to eat living humans and make our lives unhappy. Despite how meaningless it would be to say it, but this is truly the only moment where one could say, “Zombie dude, please get a life…..(and not mines)”
I could get even more technical if you like. For starters, if someone tells you to get a life, they are assuming that you lack one at that present time, there for making you a lifeless existences. This is not true, other wise the guy wouldn’t be able to converse with you in the first place. So maybe he knows you have a life, but wants you to get a second one? This is impossible as far as we know. We are all born with 1 life and we live it to the best of our ability.
Since zombies are not real(as far as my knowledge goes) and our lives stick to our bodies like glue, then this phrase has no real purpose and should be ignored like the awkward dancer if you are to run into it from here on out.
